Local Hairdressers Learn How to Cut Hair and Save the Planet
In a surprising turn of events, hairdressers across Sydney are donning the mantle of climate change warriors, thanks to seminars organised by the owner of Paloma salon, Cindy Lou.
Dubbed the A Cut with Climate workshop, the seminar trains hairdressers on how to talk to their clients about the environment and propose solutions to reduce their environmental footprint. Cindy Lou says that she realised the unique opportunity hairdressers have to hold meaningful conversations with customers and raise awareness about the climate crisis.
The earth-saving initiative was welcomed by the attendees, including Stacy, a hairdresser working for Hair Extreme, who said, “I’ve been cutting hair for thirteen years now, but I never thought I’d be cutting carbon emissions as well. It’s fulfilling to know that I can make a difference every time I trim someone’s bangs.”
Another participant, Danny, who works in a salon named Rockstar Hair, said that he was excited to start using eco-friendly products and reduce waste by recycling hair clippings. “It’s like giving back to Mother Nature one snip at a time,” he quipped.
The unique approach has drawn the attention of environmental groups worldwide, and there are talks of expanding the program to other cities worldwide. Cindy Lou has been invited to give a TED talk, aptly titled, “Scissors with a Purpose: How Hairdressers can Save the Planet.”
The seminar concludes with a quick quiz, and participants who score well get a chance to win a trip to the Great Barrier Reef – sponsored, of course, by Paloma salon.
