In the town of Kumarakom in the southern Indian state of Kerala, a new wave of trouble has hit the locals.
The town has recently been hit with an ageing society, and the consequences are dire. Elderly residents are having trouble keeping up with the times, with many being left behind in the technological era.
In an effort to combat this, local authorities have implemented several new initiatives to help the elderly keep up with the younger generations. These include free computer classes, social media tutorials and complimentary selfie sticks.
However, the elderly citizens of Kumarakom have not taken these measures kindly. Many of them have refused to learn how to use technology, claiming that it’s too complicated and they are too old to learn new things.
One resident, Granny Smith, 85, said, “I can barely work my television remote, never mind a computer!”
Another resident, Grandpa Jones, 92, added, “I just don’t see the point. Back in my day, we didn’t have these fancy gadgets and we survived just fine!”
The town has even considered hiring younger residents to “adopt” elderly residents and teach them about technology. However, this plan fell through after several young residents claimed they were “too busy taking selfies and updating their Instagram feeds.”
As the town tries to figure out how to cope with its ageing society, residents are left with one piece of advice: Don’t get old.
