A new study has found that creating more green areas in the bustling city of Barcelona could save up to £40m a year in costs linked to mental health. This is not the first time researchers have found a correlation between green spaces and better mental health. In fact, it turns out that access to trees and fresh air can actually prevent depression, anxiety, and insomnia. So, what’s the solution? More plants. And we’re not talking about the kind you find in your grandma’s living room.
Barcelona officials are considering a very ambitious plan to create more green spaces in the city. This would not only help the health of the citizens but also reduce the use of antidepressants. By the way, the citizens have made it clear that they don’t want to settle for some measly bushes; they want real live trees. But the city has an issue. They can’t simply announce that they’re digging up roads and planting entire forests in the middle of the city. So, they came up with a plan that would work for everyone. Their solution? Patios.
Yes, you read that right. Patios. Every building will be required to have a patio or terrace that is at least 500 square feet. The patio must be planted with a minimum of 3 trees, 10 plants, and a little pond with some fish in it. If you live in a high-rise building, don’t worry- you’ll still have a patio, but it will be communal. You and all your neighbors will have to share a giant garden on the 14th floor.
The city council has already started working on this project, and architects are coming up with creative ways to incorporate these green spaces into the city. Some people are, unsurprisingly, not thrilled about the idea of having a mini-forest in their backyard. One anonymous resident said, “I don’t want trees in my building. I don’t even want a patio. I just want a clean apartment and a good WiFi connection.”
Despite these complaints, the city is moving forward with its plan, and everyone hopes that it will help the citizens live happier, healthier lives. Who knows? Maybe in a few years, people will be taking trips to Barcelona just to see the stunning patios.
