In a shocking turn of events, President Joe Biden’s reputation as the self-proclaimed “climate president” took yet another hit earlier this week when a whopping 73.3 million acres of the Gulf of Mexico were offered up for fossil fuel extraction.
To put that into perspective, that’s an area the size of Italy that could potentially be destroyed all in the name of oil and gas drilling. Talk about a major oopsie!
Despite scientists’ urgent calls to phase out fossil fuels immediately, Biden’s Department of the Interior went ahead and auctioned off a vast area of the central and western Gulf, plunging deep into the ocean.
This move is sure to have long-lasting impacts on the environment, and not even Joe Biden’s own pre-election promise to halt all drilling on federal lands and waters could save him from the embarrassment of this colossal blunder.
Perhaps now is a good time for Biden to change his nickname from the “climate president” to the “drill baby drill president” – it certainly has a nice ring to it!
