Tebay, Cumbria: In a bid to become more sustainable, and to make sure the farm looks picturesque, a brand new elite group of cows have been introduced.
After a complete data analysis was done on farm economics in 2020, it was decided that the current Aberdeen Angus suckler herd was causing a loss. With the aid of the basic payment scheme falling at that point, everyone had to really look deep in the farm’s finances and come up with more efficient ones. Sadly, with the Angus suckler herd gone, they lost the chance to have cows on the scenic backdrop of their property “ecosystem engineering” throughout the year. Calves still came and went, but no tough workforce of cows were present.
As a result, it was decided that a new herd of belted Galloway cattle would be introduced into the fold with plans to grow them into a small herd. Not only that, they would also become more self-sufficient, provide meat for their family, and peddle the excess to their neighbors. And since it was a delayed Christmas promise, the husband bought three hairy cows (hardy native breeds that can survive their climate) from the Galloway show and sale in Carlisle in March to balance things out with his wife.
Now, these new cows are believed to be the talk of the town, with their cuteness factor and exquisite elegance being showcased to anyone who passes by. They are the new cow-town-queens, and local schools have already planned field trips to take selfies with them.
What’s next for these extravagant cows? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure- there’s a lot of moo-lah in the cards for the farm’s next harvest season!
