In a shocking turn of events, it has been announced that the city of Melbourne has officially overtaken Sydney as the biggest city in Australia. This comes after a boundary change that has left Sydney feeling a little less than adequate.
According to sources, Sydney residents are in a state of disbelief at the news. Many are even questioning whether they should now refer to their city as a ‘town’, or perhaps a ‘suburb’ of Melbourne.
Local resident, ‘Tom’, was quoted as saying, “I can’t believe it! I mean, what are we going to do now? We can’t go around calling ourselves the ‘largest city in Australia’ anymore. That’s just embarrassing.”
In response to the news, Melbourne mayor, ‘Jane’, has expressed her delight at the outcome. “It’s about time Melbourne got the recognition it deserves,” she said. “We’ve always known we were the better city.”
She went on to suggest that the rivalry between the two cities had become a little one-sided in recent years, with Sydney constantly bragging about its size. “Well, now it looks like the tables have turned,” she laughed.
Despite the disappointment felt by many Sydney residents, there is still hope that the city can claw back its title in the future. Some are even suggesting that Sydney should start a campaign to ‘grow’ the city, by annexing nearby areas and expanding its borders.
Only time will tell if Sydney can reclaim its throne as the biggest city in Australia, but for now at least, it looks like Melbourne has come out on top.
