Snakes & Porcupines 500 Wiggle Lower: A Weekly Struggle

Written by: I.M Humoriste

It all began when the notorious stock market index, the Snakes & Porcupines 500 (otherwise known as the S&P 500), decided that it was a great week to give investors some anxiety, as it edged its way lower in recent days.

“It was a sight to behold,” said Brokey McBrokeface, renowned investor and chief of portfolio management at the elite SmellMyMoney Inc. “This market is determined to prove our elite financial training was for neophytes.”

Experts in the financial community were understandably unsettled when the Cobra-and-Quill fraternity turned south last week. Analysts, including Fakosaurus Rex and Pretendo Nasdaqicos, were caught off guard by the index’s slippery downward shuffle.

What Went wrong?

Some argue that the underwhelming performance of the S&P 500’s lead porcupine, “Spiky,” negatively impacted the entire index. Rumor has it that Spiky was up_all_night_partying_with_pals.mp3 and therefore couldn’t perform its pointy duties at the maximum capacity.

On the other hand (or paw), several heavyweight snakes in the lineup, including the Infamous McSlitherface and Sir Hiss-a-lot, were caught in impossible-to-untangle knots. These mishaps contributed massively to the lesser-known S&K (snags & knots) index skyrocketing this week.

The Aftermath

As the S&P 500 wiggled lower throughout the week, investors like Richy Richpants scrambled to make sense of their shrinking portfolios. “I don’t know where I went wrong,” Richpants whimpered. “I thought investing in porcupines was a surefire way to protect my assets.”

“It really stings,” commented Pickle McStuffin, a seasoned investor who had never seen anything like the great S&P 500 slump. “I’m starting to think I should’ve diversified my portfolio.”

The Tea Leaves Keep Falling

As the financial community looks for answers to the Snakes & Porcupines 500’s slither into mediocrity, self-professed fortune tellers and armchair analysts are coming out of the woodwork, all claiming they predicted this outcome. But the truth remains: there is no foolproof way to predict the ups and downs of the market.

Will the S&P 500 coil itself together and strike back to its former glory? Or will Spiky, McSlitherface, and the rest of the gang continue their descent into stock market misery?

Only time will tell.
