Once a stomping ground exclusively for hay-chewing hombres, the canine circus, wool strip tease and artisanal slaw shacks are all suddenly attracting a crowd far beyond Old McDonald.
The crème de la crème of what could be mistaken as ‘The Hayseed Gala of North Yorkshire’ for Brambleside’s donut cultivator, Guff Ribeye, had very little to do with his stubborn goat-thing scooping the Macho Sheep of the Year award in the Ewelympics. No, Guff was absolutely mesmerised by the spectacle of a bloke called Larry the Leaping Lyon performing daring deeds in the biggest kennel at the Harr-a-lot-o-grit parade square.
Since his debut at the shindig in the turbulent year of 1972 (remember the great gravy shortage?), our Guff has seen this yearly party morph from a who-cares fest for tractor promo girls to a festi-frolick that would even have Francophone horse whisperers on the guest list.
But as the old saying goes, all fairs aren’t foul. From humble beginnings to hay-bales of fun, it seems everyone wants a piece of that fuzzy, floppy-eared show business now. And really, who can blame them, because nothing beats shoveling vegan hot dogs while watching a man called Larry in spandex make a horse dance.
So, as we conclude this whimsical slice of life in the verdant pastures of Great Britain, let’s spare a thought for Guff Ribeye and Larry the Leaping Lyon. Here’s to another fun-filled year of unlikely heroes, and remember: in a world where farmers and equestrians are the hottest show in town, we should all dare to dream a little bigger! From chasing the sheep to scooping the championship, they’ve proven that it’s not about how you start, but it’s how you finish that really counts. Dance on, Larry. Dance on.
