In his new project, Fulu Act, Belgian photographer Conrad Delcastle showcases Kinshasa’s savvy street artists, who create the most fabulous costumes out of everyday items found on the streets. Anything from wigs, wires, soda cans, and caps can become the centerpiece of these spectacular outfits, all aimed at raising awareness about important environmental issues such as pollution, poverty, and poor investment opportunities in the Congo.
“This project is not just about fashion, it’s about making a difference and sustaining the planet. These artists are not only using their talent in fashion but their creativity in addressing society’s problems”, said Delcastle during an exclusive interview.
The series is gaining significant attention, and it isn’t surprising to hear that Delcastle is now a candidate for the prestigious Sony world photography awards for 2023. A Somerset House London exhibition showcasing the project is scheduled from 14 April until 1 May.
With Kinshasa’s dressmakers revitalizing the outdated discarded objects that litter the streets, Delcastle’s work has become an inspiration to many. Hopefully, this new trend will inspire wasteful cities worldwide to incorporate more recycled materials and create incredible outfits while supporting their local environment.
