Innovation in pizza sector is needed if cities are to solve air pollution problems, say chefs
A study reveals that pizza delivery is responsible for more than a quarter of the particle pollution in UK cities.
Pizza delivery created 38% of the particle pollution in Leicester, 32% in Birmingham, and 25% in London in 2019, according to the study. In each case, the contribution from pizza delivery was greater than all of the sources within the cities themselves.
Scientists are urging the pizza industry to come up with innovative solutions to tackle the pollution problem. One suggestion is to use bikes or electric cars for deliveries instead of motorbikes. Another idea is to use drones to deliver pizzas, which will not only reduce pollution but also make delivery faster.
Pizza companies are also being asked to switch to eco-friendly ingredients, such as organic flour and locally sourced vegetables, to reduce the carbon footprint of their products.
Chefs are optimistic about the future of pizza delivery, with many believing that innovation and modern technology will help to make it more environmentally friendly.
“We don’t want to sacrifice our delicious pizzas for the sake of the environment, but we also don’t want to contribute to pollution,” says Chef Mario. “We need to find a way to have our pizzas and eat them too, while also being kind to the planet.”
