In a breaking news story from the Wall Street Journal, we’ve learnt that despite statewide bans, some states like Maryland and Utah have incorporated TikTok’s tracking pixel on government websites. Now, if you’re scratching your head wondering what on earth a tracking pixel is – let me break it down for you.
A tracking pixel is a teeny tiny pixel used to track user’s browsing behaviour. Basically, it’s like having that annoying friend from high school following you around all day and commenting on every move you make, except it’s an algorithm doing it instead.
So, why on earth would a state government want to use a TikTok tracking pixel, you ask? Well, we’re stumped too. It’s almost as if the government officials have all agreed to embark on a wild TikTok dance challenge, and are using the tracking pixel to monitor each other’s progress.
In a statement released by the Governor of Maryland, he insisted that “the tracking pixel was only implemented to ensure we provide the most enjoyable and entertaining browsing experience to our citizens.” Sure, because what’s more enjoyable than having a Chinese app tracking your every move?
Meanwhile, sources close to the Governor of Utah have revealed that he’s been busy working on his TikTok game, and is trying to go viral with his rendition of the “Renegade” dance. We hear he’s been shaky on the moves, but very determined.
