Officials in the small outback town of Wollongbar were left red-faced after being challenged to drink a mug of their town’s water at a heated town meeting. The challenge was issued by local resident, Karen Smith, after officials had assured the community that the water met Australian drinking standards.
Smith, who has a reputation for her dry sense of humor, brought a mug of Wollongbar water to the meeting and offered it to the officials, urging them to take a sip in front of the crowd. “Come on, it’s not that bad!” she joked.
Some officials looked visibly uncomfortable at the request, with one even claiming they had forgotten their water bottle at home. However, the majority of officials agreed to take a sip, with one even giving a thumbs up and exclaiming “It tastes just like Evian!”
The incident caused a stir on social media, with many dubbing Smith a hero for standing up to the officials. One Twitter user wrote, “The hero we need, but don’t deserve. Karen Smith, we salute you.”
The town’s water supply has been called into question previously after reports of strange smells and discoloration. However, officials have maintained that the water meets all safety standards and is perfectly safe to drink.
