In a shocking revelation today, a new study has found that the GOP-fueled far right is actually a unique phenomenon in the global political landscape. According to the report, the far right in other countries simply can’t hold a candle to the uniquely American blend of political dysfunction, gerrymandering, and rapidly changing demographics that make up the GOP base.
At the heart of this difference is America’s political system, which allows for the kind of gerrymandering that makes it possible for the Republican party to stay in power even when they’re wildly unpopular. This means that the GOP base is able to get away with all kinds of nonsensical, obstructionist behavior that would be laughed out of the room in other countries.
The study also found that the far right in other countries tends to be made up of actual white supremacists and neo-Nazis, whereas the American version is more of a grab-bag of conspiracy theorists, gun nuts, and people who think the government is putting mind-control drugs in the water supply.
“I’ve been studying far right movements for years, and I have to say, the American one is definitely the funniest,” said lead researcher Jane Smith. “I mean, where else in the world would you find a group of people who are both convinced that the moon landing was faked and also vehemently opposed to climate science?”
Of course, not everyone finds the American far right’s antics so amusing. “It’s easy to laugh at these people, but they’re doing real damage to our country,” said Senator John Doe. “We need to find a way to get them to take responsibility for their actions before it’s too late.”
But for now, it seems that the GOP-fueled far right will continue to be a uniquely American phenomenon. As one anonymous source put it, “We may be the laughingstock of the world, but at least we’re the best at it.”
