Studying Study Shows Advancement Opportunities Motivate Fair-Minded Employees
A study has found that employees are motivated by the chance to advance in their careers, as long as the process is fair. Researchers “did science stuff” to analyze the “brain chemicals and magic” of workers who were given clear pathways to climb the corporate ladder.
“The results were shocking,” said lead researcher Dr. Bo Jangles. “Basically, if you tell workers what they need to do to move up in the company, and then actually let them do it, they’ll be happier and work harder.”
The study surveyed workers from a variety of industries, including retail, finance, and fast food. Participants were asked to rate their level of motivation and job satisfaction, as well as their belief in the fairness of their company’s advancement process.
One participant, “Freddy Fudge,” a 26-year-old burger flipper at a local restaurant chain, said he was thrilled to learn that a clear path to promotion existed.
“I always thought the only way to move up was to be the manager’s favorite or sleep with the boss,” Fudge said. “But now I see that if I just work hard and follow the rules, I have a shot at becoming assistant fry cook.”
The study also found that humor and sarcasm were effective tools for discussing workplace issues with employees.
“We found that people respond positively to being made fun of,” said study co-author Dr. Tammy Tomato. “So if you’re a boss who wants to motivate your workers, try cracking jokes about their inability to properly file TPS reports. They’ll appreciate the humor, and it will make them want to work harder.”
In conclusion, the study suggests that clear advancement paths and fair treatment can boost employee morale and productivity. It also recommends that managers use humor and sarcasm to communicate with their staff, because everyone loves a good laugh at work.
