As the pandemic cleared traffic, many took the opportunity to ditch their four wheels for two. But as the roads fill up with cars once again, a nervous novice is suiting up for a perilous ride.
Meet Bob.
Bob has never ridden a bike before, but he’s been inspired by all the Lycra-clad cyclists taking advantage of the open roads during lockdown. With cars back on the scene, Bob is hoping seasoned riders will help guide him through the treacherous streets.
First up is Frank, a veteran cyclist who’s been pedaling since the days of penny-farthings. He takes Bob under his wing and shows him the ropes.
“Okay, Bob. Rule number one: always wear a helmet. Your head is a fragile thing, so you want to protect it at all costs.”
Bob nods fervently, his helmet bobbing up and down on his head like a buoy in rough waters.
“Rule number two: follow the rules of the road. That means stopping at stop signs and red lights, using hand signals to indicate turns, and staying in designated bike lanes.”
Bob nods again, but he’s starting to get a bit nervous. There’s a lot to remember.
Finally, it’s time to hit the road. Frank leads the way as Bob wobbles along behind him, his knees knocking together like a pair of castanets.
Suddenly, a car whizzes by, honking loudly. Bob swerves and nearly falls off his bike.
“Whoa there, Bob! Stay calm. Remember, you have just as much right to be on the road as they do.”
Bob takes a deep breath and tries to focus. But then another car honks, and this time he loses his balance completely. He careens into a mailbox, knocking it over with a loud crash.
Frank rushes over to help him up. Bob’s scraped his knee and his pride.
“I don’t think I’m cut out for this,” he moans.
“Nonsense!” says Frank. “You just need a little more practice. We’ll get you back on that bike in no time.”
Bob glumly climbs back onto his bike. But as they set off once again, he can’t help but daydream about his cozy car back home, waiting for him in the garage.
