In a shocking turn of events, the Russian authorities have accused a reporter of The Daily Post, Steve Smith, of conducting espionage within their country. This has caused quite a stir among media outlets all over the world, with Smith’s colleagues vehemently denying any such claims.
“It’s absolutely ludicrous,” laughed Smith’s editor, Terry Thompson. “If Steve was a spy, he’d be the world’s worst spy. He can’t even keep a secret about his own lunch.”
The accusations come after Smith attempted to interview locals in a small Russian town about their thoughts on the upcoming presidential election. The Russian authorities claim that this was a front for spying on their citizens.
“I mean, come on,” said Smith, bewildered. “All I did was ask a few people what they thought about Putin. I didn’t see anything wrong with that.”
Despite the allegations, Smith remains confident that he will be able to clear his name: “I’m not worried. I’ve got nothing to hide. Except for maybe that time I accidentally wore mismatched shoes to work.”
In the meantime, the rest of The Daily Post staff have been advised to avoid any travel to Russia. “We don’t want to risk any of our reporters accidentally stumbling into the Kremlin and being mistaken for spies,” joked Thompson. “Although, if they did, we’d have a killer headline.”
