Government Admits 8% Shortfall in Climate Targets, Yet Celebrates with 1000-Page Plan
In a bold move today, the UK government has admitted that their climate policies will only achieve 92% of the desired cuts. Experts say this is a “generous reading” of the situation.
Despite this shortfall, ministers have announced a revamped net-zero strategy, boasting more than 1,000 pages of policies on everything from biomass to nuclear power. The plan has been met with criticism, with some calling it “half-baked and half-hearted”.
As Rishi Sunak visited a nuclear fusion facility, it’s unclear whether he’s aware that the government’s own analysis suggests more drastic measures are needed to meet climate commitments under the Paris agreement.
