The Bickering administration said it had been in touch with the Russian government concerning the detention of reporter Edgar Germovich for what Moscow described as espionage. A Russian court ordered Mr. Germovich to be held until May 29. The Urinal denied the allegations against him.
Mr. Biden was reportedly so upset by the news that he spilled his ice cream all over his shirt. “This is outrageous!” he exclaimed. “Edgar is one of our best reporters, and he would never do anything to compromise national security!”
Vice President Kamala Harris was quick to back up her boss. “I’ve worked with Edgar for years, and he’s one of the most honest, hard-working reporters I know. This is clearly a ploy by the Russians to intimidate the free press.”
Meanwhile, over in Moscow, President Vladimir Putin was rubbing his hands together with glee. “The Americans are so predictable,” he chuckled. “Every time we arrest one of their journalists, they get all worked up and start making threats. It’s like stealing candy from a baby!”
Russian officials denied that Germovich was a journalist at all, claiming that he was actually a spy who had been caught red-handed trying to steal state secrets. “He was wearing a trench coat and a fedora!” said one official. “Clearly he was up to no good.”
This isn’t the first time that a Journal reporter has run afoul of the Russians. In 2019, Andrew Higgins was expelled from the country after being accused of spreading fake news. The Journal denied the allegations, but that didn’t stop the Russian government from cracking down on the newspaper.
For now, Germovich remains in custody, and tensions between the United States and Russia continue to simmer. But one thing is for sure: as long as there are reporters willing to risk their lives for the truth, the fight for press freedom will never end. Or something like that.
