In a shocking turn of events, Springboard has reported that more people are now heading out to the shops, albeit still below pre-pandemic levels. Experts are baffled as to why anyone would choose to brave the crowds, the queues, and the general mayhem that is retail therapy in the midst of a global pandemic.
“It’s a real head-scratcher,” said renowned retail analyst, Burt McMuffin. “I mean, what is there even to buy? Toilet roll and hand sanitiser have pretty much cornered the market in terms of consumer demand.”
When asked why people are ignoring safety advice and flocking to stores, Springboard spokesperson, Tiffany Teapot, had this to say: “Well, we think it’s the allure of the high street, the thrill of the hunt, the challenge of finding that one perfect item amongst the sea of mediocre merchandise.”
However, sources close to the situation suggest a different reason for the surge in shoppers: sheer boredom. “People have been cooped up in their homes for months on end, staring at the same four walls day in and day out,” said one insider. “Going to the shops provides a brief respite from the monotony of lockdown life.”
