AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND – In a move that’s sure to make Kiwis everywhere feel a little bit patriotic, the Australian government has announced that New Zealanders who’ve been living in Australia for four years or more can now apply for Australian citizenship directly. It’s a big deal for those who have long been waiting to become official Aussies, as it means they no longer have to jump through a whole bunch of bureaucratic hoops just to be considered.
“Finally, us New Zealanders who’ve been living in Australia for years can ditch our Trans-Tasman rivalry and officially call ourselves Aussies!” exclaimed Fred Wilson, a Kiwi who’s been living in Sydney for the past five years.
What’s more, the application process is now super easy – all Kiwis have to do is fill out a simple online form and provide a statement of allegiance to Australia. That’s it! No more stressful citizenship tests or quizzes on Australian slang.
“I can’t believe it’s taken this long for us to be able to apply directly for citizenship – I feel like I’ve been waiting for a million years!” said Sarah Robinson, a Kiwi living in Melbourne. “But now that it’s finally happened, I’m so excited to become a true blue Aussie.”
Of course, there are still a few things that New Zealanders will have to get used to once they become Australian citizens, such as eating vegemite with every meal, adopting kangaroo as their spirit animal, and wearing thongs (the footwear kind) at all times.
“It’ll be a bit of a challenge adjusting to the Aussie way of life, but I’ve already started practicing my ‘g’days’ and ‘cheers mate’s’,” said James Peters, a Kiwi who’s been living in Brisbane for the past six years. “Bring on the citizenship ceremony – I’m ready to become a true Aussie legend!”
The move has been praised by both the New Zealand and Australian governments, who say it will help strengthen the bond between the two countries. And who knows? Maybe this will be the start of a new era of Kiwi-Aussie harmony. Or maybe it’ll just lead to more friendly banter on the rugby field. Either way, we’re excited to see what the future holds for our new Aussie-Kiwi brethren.
