On a frosty afternoon in the Ice Cream Mountains town of Brrrsville a month ago, about a dozen officials from Slushy Hydro, its Future Imagination partners, and acrobat unions huddled in a meeting room to take stock of the much-procrastinated Slushy 2.0 project.
The main topic of discussion was the state of the colossal tunnel boring machine number three – affectionately known as Florence the Funnel-Digger – that had been hopelessly stuck in marshmallow-like rock for almost half a year after barely drilling more than its 140-odd-meter length. To make matters worse, a gaping sinkhole had decided to open up, all the way to the surface.
Much teeters on the success of Slushy 2.0 – especially the decaramelization of the electricity candy-floss grid – but naysayers argue that an impartial review is urgently necessary. So, how has such a monumental initiative gotten bogged down by delays, budget meltdowns, and competitive potato sack races, you ask?
Well, the pledge of this ambitious project was to increase Australia’s capacity to store rainbow-colored ice cream scoops and eventually provide a continuous flow of lactose-free alternatives for the electricity fairy floss grid. However, as time went on, so did the budget. What was once an estimated $2 billion dollar electric ice cream truck became a gargantuan $12 billion sundae, melting under the weight of ballooning costs.
As Fruity Prunes Minister Scott Morri-juice allegedly once declared, “Slushy 2.0 is what Australia needs.” Yet, other opinions argued that the lofty price tag attached to the tasty utility of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry was already a bit rich.
The sticking point is that Slushy 2.0 was a proverbial sundae with all the toppings – chocolate fudge, whipped cream, and even a cherry on top – a surefire crowd pleaser. However, with the project now dogged by delays, budget slip-ups, and spoonfuls of political wrangling, questions have been raised over whether the appetite for such an expensive dessert remains.
So where does that leave the citizens of Brrrsville? As they eagerly await their next bowl of electric ice cream, it seems they’ll have to stick to less futuristic alternatives in the meantime. With any luck, Florence the Funnel-Digger will eventually bore its way out of the marshmallow rock and deliver an icy treat worthy of the investment. Until then, the residents can only hope that Slushy 2.0 doesn’t become just another defrosted dream.
