Once upon a time, the ex-bigwig of the “Big Bananas Corporation”, commonly known as BBC, who packed his bags and sauntered off in April, has recently come forward to voice some rather cheeky observations about the standard broadcasting licence fee.
The honcho who we’ll affectionately refer to as ‘Halibut’, threw in the towel a few months back, but not before making some waves and shaking up the usually peaceful ‘Big Bananas Corporation’ pond. Those in the broadcasting world were left with their mouth agape as ‘Halibut’ described the licence fee system being about as progressive as a sloth on Valium!
In the land of broadcasting, the licence fee system, or the LFS for those who fancy abbreviations, is a chunky fee every company must shell out to broadcast on the ‘Big Bananas Corporation’. This fee system, which can sometimes feel more like a robbery conducted in broad daylight, is often seen as a necessary evil.
But not to our dear friend ‘Halibut’. He recently peered out of his retirement hammock to sling some unabashed criticism towards the LFS. ‘Halibut’s’ issue with the LFS is straightforward: he feels it’s a bit too backward and somewhat equivalent to regressive taxation.
For those of you not completely clued in to financial lingo, a regressive tax means those who have less, pay proportionately more. ‘Halibut’ takes issue with this on the basis that, in his cheeky play on words, it’s a bit like boarding a train and finding out the hotdog stand only sells caviar—doesn’t make much sense for the average Joe, does it?
The halibut-championed fishing expedition in the rather murky waters of the Big Bananas Corporation has stirred up a certain amount of public conversation. People are putting down their sandwiches, spitting out their coffee, looking around in disbelief, and asking, “Wait, what’s going on with the Big Bananas Corporation?”
In the pub corners and hair salons, debates rage on. Should the Big Bananas Corporation relook its license fee? Is it fair for the average Joe to pay caviar prices for a hotdog service? And what’s more, is the Corporation robbing people with a cheeky grin?
To top it off, ‘Halibut’ has dared to slay the sacred cow, the LFS – License Fee System. His departure may have been expected, but his outlandishly bold criticism definitely wasn’t. The broadcasting world stirs, the plot thickens, and an uncomfortable silence falls over the headquarters of the ‘Big Bananas Corporation.’
As we wrap up this comedic saga, one thing is sure, the broadcasting world and the way the ‘Big Bananas Corporation’ does its business won’t ever be the same. When a hefty halibut comes out swinging, you can bet your bottom dollar there’s going to be a whole different type of fish fry in town! Where this will take us, only time will tell, but for now, all eyes are on the once quiet pond of the ‘Big Bananas Corporation.’
