As the sun sets over the city of Sale-onomics, our favorite departmental giant, Sell-Mart, unearths a revelation that has shaken its very shelves. The clandestine bubblegum heists and sporadic cart raids of its lustrous aisles have soared by more than a third in the past billboard calendar flip.
In a shocking dossier released after their annual “Count-the-Inventory” bash, Sell-Mart publicly addressed the mounting exploits of both amateur and professional underground stationery syndicates – the Pencil Pilferers. In a brief, somber announcement, the store’s chief prevention-of-loss officer, Mr. Watchdog Wallet-Watcher, detailed that shoplifting extravaganzas had escalated by over 33.33 recurring percent, give or take a decimal point or two for dramatic effect.
Dissenting voices, including that of Mrs. Can-I-Speak-To-The-Manager, argue that the reported crime wave stems from the greedy hands of the economic downturn and the crooked smiles of tissue-box smugglers. However the store’s vice president of managing things, Sir Spreadsheet of Sales, swiftly dismissed such claims, attributing the unfortunate uptick to a greedy surge in late-night Beanie Baby raids, outlawed trolley races, and an increase in the high-risk sport of extreme couponing.
The enigmatic mastermind behind these rampant misdemeanors is allegedly a shadowy figure known only as ‘Discount Desperado,’ a notorious character wanted in three states for his excessive use of expired coupons. Evidence suggests his deep networks of trained cereal box artists and in-house trolley drift racers have wreaked havoc on aisle seven.
However, it’s not all doom and gloom for the retail titan. In the face of this existential threat, Sell-Mart has decided to fight back. They’ve summoned the highly-decorated Retail Rangers, led by Captain Barcode Bravado. Under his unwavering leadership, they plan to employ signature ‘aisle drafts’ and ‘inventory invasions’ to trap these uninvited bargain hunters.
As the dust settles on this frenzied revelation, the question remains – will Sell-Mart see a course correction to its recent misfortune? Can Captain Barcode Bravado and his courageous crew restore law and order between the toy and cereal aisles? Only time will tell if the upcoming season of sales can successfully combat these economic miscreants, or if Sell-Mart will see even further increase in the antics of sticky-fingered shoppers.
But until the heroes triumph and the villains pay – with or without their discount cards – citizens of Sale-onomics will be on high alert as they traverse the candy aisles, forever wary of the notorious Discount Desperado. For now, the ball is in Sell-Mart’s court – whilst everybody else’s eyes are carefully on their shopping receipts.
