In a move that surprised no one, the government recently announced an expansion of its free childcare program in the latest budget. Parents everywhere rejoiced at the thought of saving a few extra pennies, but the question remains – will it actually work?
We reached out to a few parents for their thoughts on the matter. “Honestly, I’d rather spend the money on a babysitter than deal with the headache of trying to get my kid into a free government-run daycare,” said mom of two, Becky McBeckerson.
Dad of three, Bob Robertson, added, “I’m pretty sure the government’s definition of ‘childcare’ is just putting kids in a room with some toys and hoping for the best.”
And what about the childcare workers themselves? “If they’re going to pay us minimum wage to take care of a dozen screaming toddlers, I’m going to need more than a pat on the back from the government,” said daycare worker, Sally Salamander.
Only time will tell if this expansion of free childcare will be a success or a disaster. In the meantime, parents might want to start stocking up on Advil and wine.
