With the economy tanking faster than a chocolate fountain at a weight watchers convention, it’s no surprise that Americans are feeling down in the dumps. Record-low levels of happiness have been reported throughout the nation, leading some to question whether we’re all just a bunch of Sad Sams.
According to a recent study conducted by the Institute for Depressing Statistics, the mood of the country is about as bright as a coal mine at midnight. “We’re seeing levels of pessimism that we haven’t seen since the Great Depression,” said Dr. Glum, the lead researcher on the study. “It’s pretty bleak out there.”
Many Americans are struggling to make ends meet and are finding it difficult to see a way out of their economic woes. “I used to be happy,” said Sally Sadface, a single mother of three. “But ever since the economy crashed, it’s been one long and miserable slog. I don’t even remember what it feels like to be happy anymore.”
Even the usually jolly George Gigglepants has been hit hard by the economic downturn. “I used to love my job as a clown,” he said. “But ever since the recession hit, I’ve been getting fewer and fewer gigs. It’s just not as funny when you’re performing for an empty room.”
The situation has gotten so bad that some experts are worried about the long-term impact on mental health. “We’re seeing a lot of people who are experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues,” said Dr. Doom, a psychiatrist. “It’s a really tough time for a lot of people.”
Despite the gloomy outlook, some Americans are determined to keep their spirits up. “Sure, times are tough,” said Bob Banjo, a local musician. “But we’ve still got music, laughter, and love. And that’s something to be happy about.”
Only time will tell if the economic situation will improve and if America’s happiness level will rise. In the meantime, we’ll all just have to find ways to grin and bear it.
