Sports Commentator “Bob McBob” in Tug of War with Taxman
In a bizarre twist of fate, popular sports commentator, Bob McBob, found himself embroiled in a verbal tussle with HMRC, over his employment status. Experts say the dispute erupted after Bob had incorrectly classed himself as a freelancer, rather than an employee.
Bob, who is known for his witty and often caustic commentary on popular sporting events, reportedly argued that his role was one of a “roaming individual who just so happened to grace sports events with his heavenly presence”. However, HMRC cited a number of key factors in determining that Bob was in fact an employee. These included the fact that he wore a company-branded t-shirt and was paid a regular salary.
When quizzed on the matter, Bob seemed unfazed, stating “I mean, is waving a flag and shouting encouragement really a job? To me, it’s more of an artform”.
HMRC, however, clearly saw things differently, with a spokesperson saying “We appreciate Mr McBob’s enthusiasm, however, the fact remains that he is an employee and must pay his fair share of tax”.
It remains unclear at this stage what the outcome of the dispute will be. In the meantime, Bob has reportedly been making face masks out of his old company-branded t-shirts, in an attempt to stave off boredom during these unprecedented times.
