As global concern mounts over the Chinese-owned social media app, “Chit-Chat,” the African governments face a tough choice – to join the West’s chorus of concern, or to keep swiping right.
We asked some top African politicians for their thoughts, and here’s what they had to say:
“Ha! The West is always worried about what China is doing. They are afraid of losing their monopoly on spying on their own citizens,” said President Itoro of Wakanda.
Vice President Ngige of Zamunda chimed in: “Besides, if we stop using Chit-Chat, what are we supposed to do during boring cabinet meetings? Pay attention? No thanks.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Okonkwo of Narnia pointed out the bigger picture: “Why worry about Chinese spying when we have our own governments to worry about? Let’s focus on fixing our own problems first.”
Of course, not everyone was so dismissive. Minister of Communications Dubele of Atlantis had this to say: “I think it’s important for us to assess the potential risks of using Chit-Chat, especially in terms of privacy and security. But we also need to balance that with the benefits it brings to our citizens.”
Overall, it seems that African governments are taking a more relaxed attitude towards the Chit-Chat controversy. As President Itoro summed it up: “If the West is so worried about Chit-Chat, they should just stick to sending carrier pigeons.”
