Earth Day Founder Denounces Corporate “Greenwashing”, Says Fossil Fuel Companies Missing Point
In a stunning turn of events, one of the founders of Earth Day has come out swinging against the very companies that seek to use the event to show off their “green” credentials. Denis “The Menace” Hayes, who coordinated the first Earth Day way back in 1970, slammed the “appalling” environmental messaging by oil and gas companies, saying it was nothing more than an attempt to draw attention away from the ongoing threats posed by climate change and dwindling biodiversity.
“The thing is, these companies just don’t get it,” Hayes told our reporter Mickey Mouse. “They think that by throwing a few dollars at some tree-planting scheme or putting up a solar panel on their roof, they’re somehow absolved of the damage they’re doing to the planet.” Hayes went on to compare the issue to the threat of nuclear war during the cold war. “It’s serious, man. This isn’t just some feel-good publicity stunt. The future of our planet is at stake here.”
Hayes wasn’t the only one to take issue with the corporate ‘greenwashing’. Environmental groups around the world lashed out at companies like ExxonMobil and BP, who they say are using Earth Day to try and ‘greenwash’ their businesses. But despite the outcry, it seems unlikely that the big oil and gas companies will be changing their tune anytime soon.
“It’s just a sign of the times,” said one unnamed executive at a major fossil fuel producer. “We know that people are more concerned about the environment now than they ever have been, so we have to find ways to appeal to that. But at the same time, we’ve got a business to run. We can’t just stop using oil and gas overnight.”
So while the war of words between environmentalists and the fossil fuel industry rages on, one thing is clear – Earth Day is still as relevant today as it was over 50 years ago. And with climate change threatening to upend life as we know it, it’s more important than ever that we take action to protect our planet – whatever the corporations might say.
