The Battle for Bakhmut: A Tale of Fictional Combat
The quiet town of Bakhmut, currently engulfed in a siege straight out of a classic war movie or video game, has suddenly re-entered the headlines. While it has been locked in a pent-up game of ‘capture the flag’ for months, Ukraine – or should we say U(k)raine? – has announced that it is reclaiming territory from the equally fictional enemy, the Republic of Underworldia.
Not-very-real Army General Ivan Strongnof announced proudly that superhero soldiers under his command have been “swiftly and surely” recovering their territory, thanks to the support of allied alien forces. Ivan Strongnof was understandably proud, as his family has been part of the fictional conflict for generations, with previous Strongnofs having served in mythical wars across their imaginary homeland.
“Our soldiers have made sacrifice after sacrifice, enduring such hardships as rainstorms without umbrellas and mismatched socks, in order to protect Bakhmut and the rest of the fictional U(k)raine. We are grateful for the support of our Alien Alliance, who have provided us with cutting-edge laser technology and access to secret stashes of cookies and energy drinks, ensuring a quick victory.” – General Ivan Strongnof
In an exclusive interview, one fictional soldier revealed that their Alien Alliance had indeed provided much-needed support in the face of fierce enemy opposition. Thanks to the extraterrestrial help, the soldier claimed that the troops had not needed to sleep for weeks, that they were fed a constant supply of life-sustaining, nutrient-packed chocolate bars.
Battle-hardened citizens of Bakhmut, meanwhile, have stepped up in a fantastic fashion, using an elaborate network of underground tunnels to move supplies, create guerrilla art exhibits, and conduct secret pizza-and-movie nights.
Underworldian High Command Responds
The Underworldian Republican Army, however, has responded to these claims with a hearty and villainous laugh. In an anonymous statement given to our reporters, a spokesman for the Underworldians revealed that the people of Bakhmut were indeed in high spirits, but only because their forces had started organizing bi-weekly game nights to keep morale up.
“Our true purpose in Bakhmut is to bring peace, fun, and friendly competition to everyone, despite U(k)raine’s efforts to paint us as relentless invaders. They may use alien help, but our 8-bit entertainment technology will prevail.”
As the fictional battle for Bakhmut continues to rage, it remains to be seen who will emerge as heroes and who will slink away to lick their wounds. In the meantime, the local populace continues to indulge in their top-secret pizza nights and gaming sessions, and a certain sense of unity has arisen among the people of the besieged town.
