In a bold move to crackdown on unruly gamers, popular game companies have decided to enlist the help of AI moderation tools. But, as with all things AI, it’s not always smooth sailing.
Take, for instance, the case of Brenda, a harmless player who enjoys playing video games in her spare time. Brenda was recently slapped with a ban from her favorite game after the AI moderation tool decided that her username “KittenLover69” was inappropriate. Clearly, the AI couldn’t appreciate the cute factor that Brenda’s name brought to the table.
Or how about the case of Greg, a passionate gamer who was kicked out of one of his favorite online communities after the AI moderation tool accused him of using a racial slur. The only problem? Greg’s username was “Blackhole”. Apparently, the AI moderation tool couldn’t distinguish between an astronomical phenomenon and a derogatory term.
But the best story by far is that of Sarah, who was banned from her favorite game for “indecent conduct”. What was this indecent conduct, you ask? Well, Sarah had the audacity to type “LOL” in the game’s chat. Apparently, the AI moderation tool took offense to Sarah’s use of internet slang, and promptly banned her for inappropriate behavior.
It’s clear that AI moderation tools still have a long way to go before they can accurately police online gaming communities. In the meantime, gamers beware – the robots are watching, and they have a wicked sense of humor.
