Amidst the ongoing drama of TikTok potentially getting banned in the U.S, China has officially spoken up and stated they will “strongly oppose” any attempts to force parent company ByteDance to sell the app.
“Seriously guys, like, what is this nonsense?” exclaimed Zhang Wei, a Chinese official who works in international relations. “First you steal our chop suey, now you try to steal our TikTok? Not cool, man. Not cool.”
ByteDance CEO, known only as “Liu Ming,” has also chimed in on the situation. “We have put our blood, sweat, and tears into making TikTok what it is today. It’s like a child to us. Imagine someone coming up to you and demanding you sell your own flesh and blood. That’s basically what this is.”
Meanwhile, the general public has expressed mixed feelings about the Chinese government’s stance. Some have applauded their efforts to stand up against bullying tactics from the U.S, while others have called out the government for being overly protective of a mere app.
One Twitter user, going by the handle @YungGuo, tweeted: “Yo, China needs to chill. It’s just a silly dancing app. Let the kids have their fun. #FreeTikTok”
