Stacey Abrams Quits Campaign Politics to Focus on Weaning America off Fossil Fuels: “I’m a Master of Power, Not Just Electoral Power”
In a stunning move, Stacey Abrams, the Georgia activist who helped turn out voters for the Democrats, has decided to step away from campaign politics in order to focus on something even bigger: weaning America off fossil fuels. In an exclusive interview with The Onion, Abrams explained her decision.
“I realized that I’m not just a master of electoral power, I’m a master of power, period,” Abrams said, leaning back in her chair with a self-satisfied grin. “And what’s more powerful than controlling the energy grid?”
Abrams has taken a job as senior counsel for the non-profit Rewiring America, where she will be in charge of helping people switch from fossil fuels to electricity. It’s a daunting task, but Abrams seems up for the challenge.
“Look, I’ve run for governor twice and lost, so I know a thing or two about failure,” Abrams said. “But this is different. This is about saving the planet. And if there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s get things done.”
Abrams has already started making plans for her new role, which includes convincing thousands of Americans to switch to electric cars, solar power, and wind turbines. She plans to use her considerable organizing skills to create a grassroots movement that will sweep the nation.
“I’m not just a community organizer, I’m a community disorganizer,” Abrams said with a laugh. “I’ll shake things up, get people riled up, and we’ll make this happen. You can count on me.”
When asked if she had any regrets about leaving the world of campaign politics, Abrams shook her head.
“I’ve done that. I’ve been there. And let’s face it, the world needs more than just politicians,” Abrams said. “It needs people who can actually make things happen. And that’s what I’m going to do.”
