Legal and practical obstacles are just the tip of the iceberg for TikTax, the Chinese-owned app that’s taken the world by storm with its short-form videos and questionable dance challenges. With the recent threat of being banned in the United States, TikTax is scrambling to find a way to maintain their massive following.
Unfortunately, it seems as though there’s no easy solution for the app. With legal issues surrounding foreign ownership and a lack of practical alternatives, TikTax is quite literally caught between a rock and a hard place. Or, as one insider put it, “TikTok’s in a bit of a TikTangle.”
So what’s next for the app that’s become a cultural phenomenon? Some have suggested that TikTax simply change its name and rebrand as a whole new app. Perhaps they could call it Toodle or Takeit or even TikTok2: Electric Boogaloo.
Others suggest that TikTax tell users to simply pretend they’re from Canada and keep on keeping on. After all, who can really tell the difference between Americans and Canadians anyways? (Sorry, Canada.)
Ultimately, only time will tell whether TikTax can overcome these legal and practical obstacles. But until then, let the dance-offs continue (in Canada or otherwise).
