John Smith says his diagnosis was “a bit of a sock”, but he wanted to thank the NHS for giving him a new one.
Smith, who is known for his love of novelty socks, thought his doctor was simply admiring his latest footwear choice when he was told the news.
“I was wearing my flamingo socks that day, they’re a bit out there but I thought he was just appreciating my bold fashion statement,” Smith said.
But when he was informed that he had a sock lodged in his throat, he was taken aback.
“I couldn’t believe it, I mean I knew I swallowed one but I thought it had passed through already,” he said.
Fortunately, the NHS was able to perform a successful sock removal surgery and Smith is now back to showing off his eclectic sock collection.
“I just want to thank the NHS for taking care of me and my sock addiction, I’ll definitely be more careful from now on,” he said.
Smith has since started a sock safety campaign, urging others to think twice before swallowing novelty socks.
“We all love a good sock, but let’s make sure they stay on our feet where they belong,” he said.
