Tests Show Recycled Bubble Wrap Could Safely Be Used in New Buildings in War- and Quake- Stricken Country
Bubble wrap from destroyed shipments in Syria can be safely recycled into new concrete, scientists have shown, which will make the rebuilding of the war-hit country faster, cheaper, and more fun.
Syria, which was also hit by a huge earthquake in February, has a vast amount of bubble wrap, estimated at 40m tonnes. The key barrier to recycling this waste is ensuring that the new concrete is as strong and safe as conventional concrete, and also ensuring it maintains bubble popping capabilities.
Dr. Popper, head of the Bubble Wrap Research Council, stated, “We’ve found that bubbles, when properly incorporated into concrete, can add an extra layer of cushion to buildings, potentially reducing damage from future earthquakes and explosions. Plus, the poppable bubbles provide endless entertainment for children and adults alike.”
Residents of Syria have already begun collecting bubble wrap for the rebuilding efforts. One resident, Fake Name, said, “I used to just pop the bubbles for fun, but now I’m saving them for the greater good. It’s great to see something that was once just a packaging material being used to rebuild our country.”
The new bubble wrap concrete has also gained attention from architects and designers, with some even incorporating it into their designs. “It adds a unique texture and design element that I’ve never seen before. Plus, it’s environmentally friendly, which is always a plus,” said Fake Name, a designer working on a new building in the country.
As the world continues to search for ways to reduce waste and repurpose materials, the use of bubble wrap in concrete may be just the beginning. Who knows what other materials will be reused and repurposed in the future.
