In the latest Showtime series, a group of teenage soccer players find themselves stranded in the wilderness after a terrible plane crash. The team, made up of girls from all walks of life, must band together in order to survive. But with limited food and resources, the team finds itself resorting to desperate measures.
The team, renamed The Wild Warriors, begins as a tight-knit group of girls united by their love of soccer. They encourage each other and help each other through tough times. But as the days turn into weeks, the girls become more and more desperate for sustenance.
One day, goalkeeper Jenny suggests that they start eating each other. At first, the other girls think she’s joking, but as hunger gnaws at their stomachs, they begin to consider it seriously. Eventually, they draw lots to decide who will be the first to be eaten. The unlucky player is forward Sarah.
Despite the gruesome nature of their situation, the show isn’t overly graphic. Instead, it focuses on the relationships between the girls and the ways in which they support each other in times of crisis. Plus, there are plenty of jokes to lighten the mood.
For example, when left winger Nicole suggests that they start a fire by rubbing two sticks together, centre back Rachel quips, “We’re not Boy Scouts, Nicole.” And when striker Emily suggests that they hunt for squirrels, right back Samantha deadpans, “I didn’t realize we were playing Calvinball.”
While The Wild Warriors is certainly not your typical sports show (or wilderness survival show, for that matter), it’s a funny and entertaining look at what happens when a group of teenage girls are pushed to their limits. So grab some popcorn and settle in for a wild ride with The Wild Warriors.
