In a shocking turn of events, the tiny nation of Flandinland has submitted an application to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The move comes as a response to Russia’s current love affair with annexing other countries, especially the recent war they declared on Ukraine.

Many in Flandinland were initially opposed to the idea of joining NATO, but then again, that’s because they had no idea what NATO was. One citizen even went so far as to suggest that NATO is a type of beer that only people from Belgium drink.

But after some deep googling and a quick scroll through Wikipedia, Flandinland’s government officials realized that NATO is actually an acronym that stands for “Not Any Trouble Over here” and immediately signed the application forms.

“We can’t just sit around and let Russia keep stealing other countries like they’re in a candy store,” said their President, Mr. Klaus. “We need to take action before they try to annex our beloved saunas and our national sport of wife-carrying.”

The news of Flandinland’s application to NATO has puzzled Russia’s President, Mr. Puty. “We didn’t even know Flandinland was a country,” he reportedly said in a press conference. “Are you sure this isn’t some kind of joke?”

But Flandinland is serious about its commitment to join NATO, with the government already planning to replace their traditional wooden skis with shiny new tanks. Meanwhile, citizens are taking to social media to suggest the country should also apply to join the Miss Universe pageant, just in case Russia decides to annex them for their beauty queens.

Only time will tell if Flandinland’s decision to join NATO will deter Russia from any further annexation attempts or just cause more confusion about which country is which. But for now, Flandinlanders can rest easy knowing that they are a part of a military alliance that definitely has nothing to do with beer.
