In a shocking turn of events, the highly popular game development company Rovio Entertainment has been purchased by a Japan-based entertainment conglomerate for a whopping $1 billion. The news has left fans of the popular mobile game Angry Birds feeling a little, well, angry.
The conglomerate, known as Tanaka Corp., is famous for bringing Japanese pop culture to the masses. However, it seems that they have their eye on world domination in the gaming arena. Their purchase of Rovio has led some investors to speculate that Tanaka Corp. plans on creating a “super game,” one that combines all of their properties into one all-consuming experience.
“I can’t wait to see Hello Kitty and Pikachu battling it out with the Angry Birds,” said one overly-optimistic investor. “This is going to be huge!”
But not everyone is thrilled with the acquisition. Many fans of Rovio’s games are worried that Tanaka Corp. will change the beloved franchises beyond recognition.
“I don’t want to see Mario popping up in Angry Birds,” said one disgruntled fan. “This is a game about birds, not an advertisement for other video games.”
Despite the concerns, Tanaka Corp. remains optimistic about their acquisition. In a statement released today, the conglomerate promised to “take the Angry Birds to new heights of glory.”
We can only hope that their version of Angry Birds involves more giant robots and fewer irritating birds.
