The British government has just announced that they will be giving £301 to eight million people on low incomes and receiving benefits. But instead of just doling out this money, they decided to make it a game of sorts.
Introducing the game show, “Who Wants to Be a Hundredaire?” where contestants must answer trivia questions to be eligible for the cash prize of £301.
Hosted by the one and only Bobbert, the show will feature questions like “Which Kardashian has the most Instagram followers?” and “What’s the capital of Canada?”
Contestants will have unlimited lifelines, including phone-a-friend, ask the audience, and the all-important “Google a stranger from Twitter.”
But there’s a twist. The government has partnered with casinos across the country to turn the game show into a sweepstakes. Contestants will have the opportunity to gamble their £301 for a chance to win up to £5,000.
The catch? All contestants who choose to gamble and lose their money will be automatically enrolled in a new reality show called “The Benefits Apprentice,” where they will compete for a job placement with absolutely no benefits.
Some are already criticizing the government for turning a crucial support system for vulnerable populations into a game of chance. But others argue that it’s a fun and innovative way to stimulate the economy.
